California preliminary notice

In California a preliminary notice is required before you can record a valid lien, unless you are a laborer. A claimant who contracted directly with the owner serves only the construction lender. Serve it within 20 days of first furnishing. A late notice still works, but only for work you furnished in the 20 days before it was served and afterward. Without any notice there is no lien (Cal. Civ. Code §§ 8200, 8204).
