Massachusetts notice of identification

Massachusetts does not require a notice at the start of a job. If you were hired by a subcontractor (not by the general contractor), you may send a Notice of Identification to the general contractor by certified mail, return receipt requested, within 30 days after you start work. If you do not, your lien cannot exceed what is owed under the subcontract above you (G.L. c. 254, § 4). If you were hired by the owner or the general contractor, you do not need this notice.
