South Carolina notice of furnishing

South Carolina does not require a notice at the start of a job, and a Notice of Furnishing is not required. It matters only if a Notice of Project Commencement was filed for the project and you supplied a subcontractor rather than the general contractor. In that case, without it your lien is limited to what the general contractor still owes the subcontractor you supplied; once the contractor receives it, the contractor’s later payments to that subcontractor do not reduce your claim (S.C. Code Ann. §§ 29-5-20(B), 29-5-23). Send it to the contractor by certified or registered mail. There is no deadline, but it protects you only from the date it is received.
